Runway Ready: a Fashion Design Immersion Retreat

1 week intensive retreat
for aspiring fashion designers

long dress design showing the theme of the retreat

Are you an aspiring fashion designer preparing for college? Runway Ready is a 1-week summer retreat created just for you — hosted by Sew by the Sea in beautiful Sebastian, Florida. This is more than a sewing camp — it’s an intensive, skill-building experience taught by a former college fashion professor with 40 years of experience.

Students will learn:

  • Flat pattern drafting & sloper development

  • Draping techniques on professional dress forms

  • Garment construction techniques

  • Fashion sketching & concept development

  • Portfolio prep to impress top design schools

With five hours of daily instruction and homework assignments, students leave with portfolio pieces that reflect their individual design voice — and the confidence to succeed at the college level.

Daily Schedule

Classes are small (2–8 students max), allowing for personalized instruction in a relaxed, coastal setting just minutes from the beach. On-site housing is available for out-of-town students (girls only, ages 12+) with supervised structure  balanced with free time. Boys enrolled in the program will have to secure their own off-site lodging and Uber or drive to class at the retreat.

*Parents are welcome to travel and lodge with their teens off-site and view the retreat home quarters, but are not allowed to attend classes.  Reasons for this are to instill independence and autonomy in the designers, crucial steps in creative development.

Materials Needed

All the supplies a student needs will be provided. We will be making a garment that is composed of 3 yards of woven fabric. If you choose to use your own choice of fabric, additional choices will be available for purchase, or you can bring 3 yards of your own (woven) fabric. No stretch fabrics. If the fabric is a solid color, also by matching thread. I have lots of thread, but it may not be an exact match to your fabric.

FAQs-Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this retreat for?

Runway Ready is designed for students ages 12–17 who are serious about pursuing fashion design. It's ideal for those preparing to apply to fashion colleges or interested in building real-world design skills.

Do I need previous sewing experience?

Some basic machine experience is helpful but not required. You’ll be asked to complete a brief questionnaire before acceptance so we can tailor instruction to your skill level.

Where is the retreat held?

In Sebastian, Florida — just minutes from the beach! The retreat is hosted in a private 3-bedroom home converted for creative instruction and student housing.

Is housing included?

Yes, on-site housing is available for up to 4 students (female only). Students share rooms with twin beds and must be comfortable staying in a supervised but independent setting.

❓ Are meals included? For students that are staying at the retreat house, it will be stocked with food for breakfast and dinner that they may cook themselves. Lunch will be catered. The only food that is NOT INCLUDED is if they choose to go to a local restaurant. All students that are not staying at the retreat house are responsible for all their own meals. They will be provided menus from the same catering restaurant as the others who have meals included and can call in the morning to add their order to the one being delivered for lunch.

If my child cannot stay at the retreat because he is a boy, where can he stay?

There are many AirBnb's and hotels in the area. If you wish to come along and have a nice vacation as well, I recommend staying at Captain Hiram's on the ocean in Sebastian.

Can parents attend or stay at the retreat house?

No. To create a focused, creative space for students, parents are not permitted to stay on site. They are welcome to inspect the quarters upon drop off and pick up only.  Supervision is provided throughout the program, and random check-ins at 10 pm are part of the structure. Parents and guardians are not permitted to stay at the retreat home, in order to preserve a focused, immersive learning environment. Emergencies

Product Manager

Yes — absolutely. It’s strongly recommended (and often legally advised) that you require all student participants to carry their own health insurance during the retreat.

Here’s why:

✅ Why You Should Require Health Insurance:

  1. Liability Protection for You
If a student is injured (cut with scissors, trips, dehydration, etc.), you don't want to be financially responsible for their medical care.

  2. Emergency Readiness
If someone needs to go to the ER or urgent care, the hospital will expect payment or proof of coverage. You’ll want to know that’s already in place.

  3. Peace of Mind for Parents
Parents will feel safer sending their teen if this is a standard requirement — it shows professionalism and preparedness.

📝 How to Handle It:

  • Include a requirement in your registration form or waiver stating:

All students must provide proof of current health insurance coverage prior to attending the retreat.

  • Ask for a copy of their insurance card (photo or PDF is fine)

  • Add a medical release form allowing you to seek emergency care on their behalf if necessary.

💡 Bonus Tip:

If you ever expand to allow international students or out-of-state guests who don’t have coverage, you can recommend they purchase temporary short-term medical insurance for travel (very affordable and easy to arrange online).

Would you like a sample waiver or medical release form you can adapt for your program?
